Our Candlelight Christmas Eve Service begins at 4:45pm with music from UU Wellesley's Adult and Youth Choirs, brass players from the congregation and greater community, and Suzie Cartreine, Director of Music.  Rev. Terry Sweetser will lead us in a traditional service of carols and readings culminating in joyous candle lighting.  Please bring a plate of cookies to share during Social Hour.  Cookies can be brought to Parish Hall before the service.  Cider will be provided.

The evening’s plate collection will support hurricane relief efforts.  Hurricane Maria crossed Puerto Rico on September 20.  Two weeks earlier the US Virgin Islands took a direct hit from Hurricane Irma.  Both were Category 5 storms that left behind enormous devastation.   Three months after these storms, electricity is still unavailable, safe drinking water is lacking in many areas, and most homes and businesses are damaged at best, or totally destroyed in many cases.

Our Social Justice Council has chosen two organizations suggested by the UUA: the Hurricane Maria Community Relief and Recovery Fund (The Maria Fund) and The Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands.  Both focus on short-term and long-term recovery efforts.  Ongoing short-term efforts include distributing solar lights, water, food, cleaning supplies, tarps for shelters, and generators.

In Puerto Rico, problems of poverty, crumbling infrastructure, political corruption and a failing economy have long existed. The Maria Fund, a newly formed organization, supports grassroots organizing of vulnerable communities with the hope of transforming Puerto Rico’s future to one of equity, justice, and sustainability.

In the Virgin Islands, the Community Foundation has existed for over 25 years and is working with long-established, local nonprofits in the areas of elder care, youth programming, cultural preservation, and animal welfare.

If you are unable to attend the Christmas Eve service but want to donate to this cause, you may mail a contribution to the UU Wellesley office before the end of December.  Checks should be made out to UUSWH with “Hurricane Maria Relief” on the memo line.
