Questions Our Visitors Often Have
We are delighted that you are considering a visit to UUSWH and know that things can be a bit confusing or mysterious your first couple of times. Below is the set of questions visitors most frequently have, and answers that we hope will smooth your way into our community.
- When are Sunday Services?
- Sunday worship services are held every Sunday from the first Sunday in September after Labor Day through the second Sunday of June. We have one service each Sunday at 10:30 AM, which normally lasts about an hour. There are no formal services in the summer, however informal services are being planned for the summer of 2008.
- What are Sunday Services like at UUSW?
- You can get more detailed information about the content of worship services by going to our Sunday Services page in the Worship section.
- Where are you?
- UUSWH is located at
309 Washington Street (Route 16) in Wellesley Hills, MA, just west of
the intersection of Routes 9 and 16. You can click here for a map and to get directions.
- Where do I park, and what door should I come in?
- If you arrive relatively early, you can usually find a space in the church parking lot to the west of the church buildings, or the lot behind the church. If you come a little later, you can park on either side of Washington Street, on which the church is located, or on side-streets opposite the church. If you park in the lots, come in the main entrance on the west side of the church. If you park on the street, you might want to come into the entrance at the rear of the courtyard which is surrounded on three sides by our buildings.
- What should I wear?
- This is one of the most un-asked questions which almost every visitor wants to know the answer to. Our suggestion is to come however you are comfortable. You will see a wide range of styles of dress at our services, from people in jeans to those in suits and dresses. When there is an after-service event, or when the weather is bad, people tend to dress casually. At traditionally important services such as Christmas Eve, they often dress more formally. It's up to you.
- Is there a children's program, and if so, when?
- The Cooperative Church School operates every week while church is in session, with a varied program of classes and activities for children from pre-kindergarten through 5th grade. The Junior Youth Program provides for youth in grades 6, 7 & 8 and meets during the during the regular service same time as well. The Senior Youth Program is for those in high school and meets at different times. More information about the entire Religious Education program is available here.
- Is there childcare available during services?
- Childcare is available during Sunday worship service for children from infants to age 3. Children can be dropped off beginning at 10:15 AM, and should be picked up by 11:45 AM. For more information about childcare, you can refer to the Religious Education section of this web site.
- Do you have a regular daycare program?
- The Society itself does not run a daycare program, but we do rent space in our buildings to a private daycare provider. You can find out about them by calling Wellesley Hills Children's Inc at (781) 235-7844.
- How can I get more information?
- Before or after any Sunday service there are representatives of the Welcoming Committee in the courtyard vestibule entrance who can answer any questions you may have, help you and or your children find where to go, sign you up to receive our newsletter for a period of time, or connect you with the Minister or Director of Religious Education. At any other time, you can call the church office, or send us an inquiry by email. There is also a wealth of information available about the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations, our denominational home, at their web site.
- Do you ever cancel Sunday services?
- On rare occasions Sunday services will be cancelled when severe winter weather makes traveling unsafe. If you have questions about whether services are being held, please call the Church office at 781.235.7423 and listen to the voice message there.
